Kam River Signs D Joe McCollum

Oliver Paipoonge, ON | The Kam River Fighting Walleye are pleased to announce the signing of 2001-born defenceman Joe McCollum. The Thunder Bay product split the 2019-20 season between the St.Cloud Blizzard (NAHL) and the Pembroke Lumber Kings (CCHL). In 41 total games he produced 8 points from the blue line.

“It’s great to be back in my hometown for hockey again,” said McCollum. “With everything going on this year it’s nice to have solid ground again. Excited to see what we can begin to build in our inaugural season and in the future. Go Fish!” he concluded.

Fighting Walleye head coach Matt Valley is excited to add another high-end blue liner to his lineup. “Joey is a great kid and player who brings a lot to the table for our organization moving forward,” Valley said. “His talent on the back end speaks for itself. But his work ethic, character, and personality are exceptional. These traits are often the most important when building a successful team. I'm excited and honoured to be part of his hockey journey and story. Welcome home, Joe!”

Prior to his rookie junior season last year, the 6’1” 200 pound McCollum spent 2 seasons with the Belle Tire AAA program in Detroit, Michigan, and played his U16 year for the Thunder Bay Kings AAA organization.

“When we first got word that adding Joey was a possibility, we were all in,” said Kam River General Manager Kevin McCallum. “He instantly raises our game and profile as a future contender in the SIJHL. Our Coach Matt Valley put in a lot of time with Joey and his family to address any concerns moving forward,” he said. “ We want to make sure this is a perfect home to help Joey achieve his goals in hockey and in life. I’m extremely excited as our team continues to get better and grow on and off the ice,” the GM added.

McCollum has started practicing with the Walleye and will make his debut this Friday at the Teleco Cup. The games can be viewed online at ViewStub.com.
