Josh Pufahl Commits to VIU

The Kam River Fighting Walleye are pleased to congratulate ‘02 defenseman Josh Pufahl on his commitment to Vancouver Island University and their BCIHL hockey program for the ‘23-‘24 season.

“I’ve always had the goal of playing university hockey and couldn’t be happier to join VIU next year, continuing my academic and hockey career there,” Pufahl said. “I would like to thank first and foremost my parents for their support over my career. I’d also like to thank past and present teammates, coaches, staff and trainers for the role they have played in getting me to this position. Still got a job to finish here, but can’t wait to get started on the coast next year with my new teammates! Go Mariners!”

The native of Calgary, Alberta played 26 regular season games for the Fighting Walleye after being acquired from the Kindersley Klippers of the Saskatchewan Junior League on December 1st. Pufahl recorded 5 goals and 14 assists, to go along with 29 penalty minutes, for the Fish in ‘22-‘23.

Kam River General Manager Kevin McCallum is happy to see the veteran defenseman moving on to the next level after this season. “Josh is a great player and an even better person,” McCallum said. “Since joining our club he has been a difference maker on the ice, and a great teammate, leader, and member of the community off of it. It’s extremely satisfying when an outstanding young man like Josh earns a spot at the next level. We are very happy for him and can’t wait to see the things he does in the future,” said McCallum.

In total, Pufahl played 100 regular season games of Junior A hockey, amassing 33 points and 123 penalty minutes.

"It was evident watching Josh's first shift he was a Defenceman that would immediately step into our lineup, and play a big role,” said Andrew Riddell, manager of VIU’s hockey program. “His ability to watch the play develop and think a couple steps ahead, always put him in the right position. Aside from all the natural talent Josh possesses, our conversations on the phone really solidified our decision to offer the commitment to Josh. He's a very mature player, knows what he wants to do for a career, and is someone I can see being a leader on our team in the years to come. We are excited to welcome Josh, and his family, to the VIU Mariners,” concluded Riddell.

Congratulations, Poof!
